🔧 Product Description
A genuine Volvo Penta ceramic ballast resistor used in selected conventional ignition systems based on Volvo B19, B21 and B23 petrol engines. The resistor is connected in series with the ignition coil during normal running and limits primary-circuit current to protect the coil and ignition contacts. Its nominal resistance is approximately 0.9 ohm. The starting circuit can bypass the resistor on applicable installations to provide a stronger spark while cranking.
🚤 Compatibility
- HP Range: Approximately 120-145 HP
- Year Range: Approximately mid-1970s-late 1980s, dependent on ignition system
⚙️ Key Features
- OEM Volvo Penta part number 1266014
- System group: Other Electrical Equipment
- Supersedes and replaces previous part number 870941
- Net weight approximately 0.073 kg
- Fits AQ and BB series marine petrol engines
- Engine type: Volvo B19/B21/B23 inline 4-cylinder petrol engine with conventional ignition
🔌 Function
A resistor introduces a controlled amount of electrical resistance into a circuit to limit current flow or drop voltage to the level required by the connected component. In marine engine electrical systems it protects and conditions the supply to items such as ignition, instrument or control circuits.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Open circuit or no continuity when tested with a multimeter
- Resistance value drifting outside specification, causing incorrect voltage at the connected component
- Visible overheating, discolouration, cracking or burning of the resistor body
- Intermittent operation of the circuit it feeds, such as ignition or gauge faults
- Corroded or loose terminals producing high resistance and voltage drop
🛠️ Service Notes
- Isolate the batteries before working on the circuit, and note the connections and any insulating sleeving, spacers or standoffs before disconnecting so it all goes back the same way
- Fit it in its original position with the same air gap around it; a resistor gets hot in normal use and must not be packed against a hose, harness or plastic part
- Where the original sheds heat through its mounting, make sure the mounting surface is clean and the same contact is restored
- Make the terminals off clean and tight with no strain on the leads, and protect the joint against damp in the way the original was protected
- A resistor rarely fails on its own — check the circuit it sits in for a short, a chafed lead or a failed component before fitting a new one
