A genuine Volvo Penta threaded mounting stud used in selected heavy-duty cooling-fan, fan-ring and viscous-fan-drive assemblies. The stud provides the fixed threaded mounting point for the fan or associated retaining hardware while maintaining the original spacing and clamping arrangement. Six studs are commonly used in the applicable fan assembly. Correct stud length and thread engagement are important because an incorrect fastener can reduce fan clearance, distort the hub or allow the fan attachment to loosen under vibration.

🔌 Function

The stud screws permanently into a tapped hole in the engine and provides a fixed threaded projection onto which a mating component is located and clamped with a nut. This allows repeated removal and refitting of the component without wearing the threads in the parent casting.

• Stretched or necked stud causing loss of clamping torque
• Damaged, galled or stripped threads preventing correct nut torque
• Corrosion or seizure making the nut impossible to remove without breaking the stud
• Stud snapped or sheared flush with the mounting face
• Repeated loosening of the fastened component or joint leakage at the mating face

🛠️ Service Notes

• Clean and chase the female thread before fitting so the stud can pull down square and to full depth
• Screw studs in with a proper stud installer or the double-nut method; gripping the plain shank with pliers or self-grips scores it and the nut will never seat or torque correctly afterwards
• Screw the stud home until it seats as the manual for your engine describes, and no further — a stud wound in hard to cure a slack thread will simply split the casting
• Renew studs that are stretched, necked, bent or corroded rather than reusing them; exhaust and manifold studs in particular are cheap next to the work of extracting a broken one
• Tighten the nuts to the torque figures and in the sequence given in the workshop manual for your engine, and where a stud passes into an oil or coolant space seal it as the manual specifies
