🔧 Product Description

A genuine Volvo Penta valve-stem oil seal for selected Volvo petrol-engine cylinder heads. The seal controls lubricating oil around the valve stem and guide while allowing the small amount of lubrication required for reliable valve movement. The seal is widely used in Volvo red-block marine and automotive engines and has strong aftermarket support. Quantity depends on cylinder-head design: eight seals are commonly required on an eight-valve four-cylinder head, while sixteen may be used on a sixteen-valve head where the same seal is specified.

🔌 Function

The valve stem seal fits over the inlet valve stem and guide to meter the oil film reaching the stem. It retains lubrication at the guide while stopping excess oil being pulled into the inlet port during operation.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Blue-grey exhaust smoke, particularly on start-up or after idling
  • Rising oil consumption with no external leaks
  • Oil fouling or carbon build-up on inlet valves and spark plugs
  • Hardened, cracked or perished seal material found during head or valve service
  • Excessive valve guide wear or oil pooling in the inlet ports

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Always fit new seals — a stem seal is a single-use item and one that has been pulled off a guide will not seal again
  • Check the valve guide and stem for wear before fitting; a new seal on a worn guide will not cure oil consumption and will be destroyed in short order
  • Protect the seal from the collet grooves and any sharp edge on the valve stem as it passes over, using the protective sleeve or cap supplied or the specified tool
  • Press the seal on square with the correct fitting tool, onto a clean, dry guide, until it is fully home — never lever it on or strike it directly, and take care not to displace the garter spring on the lip
  • Lightly oil the stem with clean engine oil before assembly, then turn the engine over by hand and check nothing binds before it is run
