🔌 Function

The valve spring washer forms the lower seat for the valve spring, spreading spring load evenly onto the cylinder head and preventing the coil from cutting into the head surface. It also helps keep the spring concentric with the valve stem and guide so the valve closes squarely on its seat.

• Visible grooving, scoring or wear marks where the spring coil bears on the washer
• Cracked, distorted or broken washer found during cylinder head service
• Ticking or clatter from the valve train and inconsistent valve clearances
• Reduced valve spring load leading to poor sealing, compression loss or rough running
• Debris or metal particles in the valve cover area indicating washer breakup

🛠️ Service Notes

• Renew as a set when the valve gear is stripped, and keep the parts for each valve together so nothing is mixed between cylinders
• Inspect the seating face for cupping, cracking or a wear step before reassembly and renew rather than reuse anything marked
• Make sure the seat in the head and the face of the washer are clean, with no carbon or swarf trapped underneath
• Fit the correct way up and the correct way round as shown in the workshop manual for your engine, and check the spring and any seal or shroud sit square before the spring is compressed
• Once assembled, check by hand that each valve moves freely and seats fully before the engine is turned over
