🔌 Function

A spacer sleeve sets and maintains a fixed distance between two mating components, ensuring correct bolt preload and alignment once the assembly is torqued. It transfers clamping load through the joint so that the surrounding parts are not crushed or distorted.

  • Visible crushing, flattening or deformation of the sleeve ends
  • Loss of clamping torque or bolts that will not hold specified preload
  • Wear, scoring or ovality on the sleeve bore or outer surface
  • Component movement, rattling or misalignment in the assembly it supports
  • Corrosion or pitting causing the sleeve to seize on its fastener

🛠️ Service Notes

  • A spacer sleeve sets a fixed length in the joint — never leave one out, shorten one, or substitute a stack of washers, or the clamping load and alignment will both be wrong
  • Check that the sleeve is square and fully seated in its counterbore or recess before any fastener is tightened
  • Discard a sleeve that is crushed, bell-mouthed, scored or corroded; a shortened sleeve lets the joint be over-clamped and the component distorted
  • On sleeves in an oil circuit, make sure the bore is clear and that any seal running on the sleeve has a clean, unscored surface to work against
  • Tighten the joint to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine, with the sleeve taking the clamping load rather than the component it protects
