🔌 Function

The plug seals a threaded port or drilled passage in the engine or transmission housing, containing oil, coolant or fuel within the system. It also prevents dirt and water from entering the sealed passage during operation.

• Fluid weeping or dripping from around the plug seating
• Corrosion or pitting on the plug body or sealing face
• Damaged, stripped or cross-threaded threads that prevent correct torque
• Plug loosening in service, causing pressure loss in the sealed circuit
• Seized or rounded plug that cannot be removed cleanly at service intervals

🛠️ Service Notes

• Clean the threads and the seating face before fitting, and make sure the opening itself is clear of old sealant, swarf and corrosion
• Renew the sealing washer or O-ring where one is fitted rather than reusing a flattened one, and only use thread sealant where the workshop manual for your engine calls for it
• Tighten to the figure given in the workshop manual for your engine — plugs in aluminium and other soft castings strip easily, and a plug pulled up hard to cure a leak usually distorts the seat and makes it worse
• Where the plug closes an oil, fuel or coolant passage, run the engine up to temperature afterwards and check the joint under pressure before signing the job off
• Keep removed plugs paired with the holes they came out of during a strip-down — plugs of very similar appearance often differ in thread, reach or sealing type
