• Renew any pin that is bent, scored, mushroomed or a loose fit — a damaged locating pin lets the mating parts shift and the joint leak
• Locate the mating component on its pins first and check it sits flat before any fastener is tightened; pulling parts together on the bolts will shear or displace the pins
• Where the pin is a hollow or sealing type, make sure the joint face around it is clean and apply whatever sealing compound the manual for your engine specifies
