The hardened washer controls the gear's axial position and provides the replaceable thrust surface between the rotating gear and stationary timing-case components. 🔌 Function

The thrust washer sits against the crankshaft thrust face to absorb axial (fore-and-aft) loads and maintain correct crankshaft end float. Keeping end float within specification protects the main bearings, connecting rods and the drive coupling from misalignment and shock loading.

• Excessive crankshaft end float measured during inspection
• Scoring, grooving or bluing on the washer's bearing face
• Wear beyond specified thickness, allowing fore-and-aft crankshaft movement

• Note which way round each washer comes off and refit it the same way; where one face is grooved or lined, that face runs against the moving part
• Measure the end float or running clearance after fitting and compare it with the figure in the workshop manual for your engine — thrust washers are what sets it, and some are supplied in more than one thickness
• Renew the pair or the full complement together, never one new washer alongside a used one
• Check the faces the washer bears against for scoring, ridging or heat discolouration and clean off any pick-up before assembly
• Oil the washer and its seat on assembly and prime the lubrication system before the engine is turned under power
