The valve spring washer sits between the valve spring and its seating surface in the cylinder head, spreading spring load evenly and protecting the mating face from wear. It helps maintain correct spring alignment and installed height so the valve closes fully and consistently.

• Make sure the seat in the head and the face of the washer are clean, with no carbon or swarf trapped underneath
• Fit the correct way up and the correct way round as shown in the workshop manual for your engine, and check the spring and any seal or shroud sit square before the spring is compressed
• Once assembled, check by hand that each valve moves freely and seats fully before the engine is turned over
