  • Year Range: Approximately 1990s-2005

⚙️ Key Features

  • OEM cast manifold for the 16-litre charge-air system
  • Distributes intake air evenly across the six cylinders
  • Original flange, port and fastening geometry
  • Designed for turbocharged boost pressure and diesel-engine vibration
  • Works with the specified gaskets, sealing rings, plugs and connecting pipe
  • Engine type: 16.1L inline-six turbocharged/aftercooled diesel

🔌 Function

The inlet manifold channels charge air from the turbocharger and charge air cooler into the cylinder head intake ports, distributing it evenly across all cylinders. A correctly sealed manifold maintains boost pressure and supports clean, efficient combustion.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Audible air leaks or whistling under boost from cracked castings or failed gasket faces
  • Loss of boost pressure with reduced power and increased exhaust smoke
  • Corrosion, pitting or oil and soot residue around the manifold mating flanges
  • Warped or damaged sealing surfaces preventing a proper gasket seal
  • Cracking around mounting bosses or stud holes from thermal cycling and over-torqued fasteners

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Blank the open ports as soon as the manifold is off, so nothing can drop into a cylinder or the head while it is away
  • Clean both mating faces without scoring them, check the manifold for flatness, cracks and corrosion, and fit new gaskets and seals throughout
  • Clean out oil, soot and carbon deposits from the manifold interior before refitting, and look at the crankcase breather arrangement if the build-up is heavy — refitting a fouled manifold puts the restriction straight back
  • Tighten the fasteners evenly, working outwards from the centre in stages to the figures given in the workshop manual for your engine
  • Refit and check all charge air, breather and sensor connections and their clips; an air leak on a pressure-charged inlet shows up as lost power and smoke rather than an audible leak
