🔌 Function

A companion flange bolts to a mating flange or shaft end to form a rigid, concentric connection that transmits rotation between the two components. Correct seating and torque are essential to maintain alignment and prevent runout in the drive it serves.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Cracking or fracturing around the bolt holes or hub
  • Elongated, worn or galled bolt holes causing loss of clamping force
  • Corrosion or pitting on the mating face preventing a flat, concentric fit
  • Vibration, excessive runout or noise from the drive during operation
  • Wear or fretting on the shaft interface leading to slip or misalignment

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Clean the taper, key and keyway dry before assembly and check them for burrs, wear and hammer marks; the flange must pull up on the taper, not on the key
  • Check the flange face for scoring, corrosion and runout, and the coupling bolt holes for elongation — a distorted flange shows up as vibration under way
  • Where a shaft seal runs on the flange, check that running surface is smooth and unworn, because a scored surface will destroy a new seal
  • Fit a new locking nut, tab washer or split pin as originally used, and tighten to the figure given in the workshop manual for your installation
  • Check shaft alignment and face contact across the coupling after fitting, and re-check the fasteners after the first period of running
