🔧 Product Description
This is a genuine Volvo Penta shaft from the lubricating and oil system group, used within the oil circuit drive arrangement on the 30- and 31-series marine diesel engines and their D40/D45 relatives. It is a precision rotating component that transmits drive within the lubrication assembly, and it is supplied as an individual service item rather than as part of a larger sub-assembly.

🔌 Function
The shaft transmits rotational drive within the engine's lubricating oil system, allowing the oil pump assembly to be turned and maintain oil pressure and circulation. Correct fit and condition of this shaft are essential to consistent lubrication of the engine's internal components.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Low or fluctuating oil pressure readings at the gauge or warning lamp
- Audible whine, knock or rattle traced to the oil pump drive area
- Visible wear, scoring or step formation on the shaft bearing surfaces
- Excessive play or end float in the driven assembly during inspection
- Metal particles or bronze-coloured debris found in the oil or filter
🛠️ Service Notes
- Handle and store the shaft so the bearing journals and seal running surfaces stay unmarked — a nick on a seal track will cause a leak that no new seal will cure
- Remove the protective coating and check the shaft for straightness, scoring, pitting and stepped wear at the journals, splines and seal areas before fitting
- Lubricate journals, splines and seal surfaces with clean oil of the grade specified for the assembly as it goes together, and renew the seals and any single-use nuts or locking devices disturbed on removal
- Draw bearings and couplings on square with a press or drawing tool that loads only the correct race — hammering a bearing onto a shaft marks the races and can distort the shaft
- Set end float, backlash and shim thickness to the values in the workshop manual for your unit, then turn the assembly by hand to confirm it is free before applying power
