🔌 Function

The tappet follows the camshaft lobe and converts its rotating profile into the linear motion that drives the push rod, rocker arm and valve. It maintains correct valve timing and lift while absorbing the side loading generated at the cam contact face.

🛠️ Service Notes

• Keep the tappets in order as they come out and refit each to its original bore if they are being reused; a used face and its own cam lobe have bedded to each other
• Inspect the contact faces before fitting — pitting, scoring, a cupped or dished face, or a flat spot on a roller means the tappet is finished, and the matching cam lobe must be inspected as well
• Renew tappets and camshaft together where either is worn; a new camshaft run on worn tappets, or the reverse, will not last
• Coat the tappet face and its bore with clean engine oil or the assembly lubricant specified for your engine before fitting, so the first start is not a dry one
• Bar the engine over by hand after assembly to confirm free, quiet movement, then set and check the valve clearances by the method and figures in the workshop manual for your engine
