🔌 Function

The gasket forms a sealed joint between two mating components, preventing the escape of fluid, gas or pressure across the mating faces. It compresses on assembly to take up minor surface irregularities and maintain a leak-free seal in service.

• Visible fluid seepage or staining at the joint face
• Hardened, brittle or cracked gasket material on removal
• Loss of pressure or compression across the sealed joint
• Flattened, crushed or extruded sections indicating the gasket has taken a permanent set
• Repeat leaks shortly after reassembly when the original gasket is reused

🛠️ Service Notes

• Fit a new gasket every time the joint is disturbed — a gasket takes a permanent set once it has been torqued and will not seal reliably a second time
• Scrape both faces back to clean bare metal, keeping the blade at a shallow angle so it lifts the old material without gouging the surface, and use a plastic scraper on aluminium castings
• Check the faces for flatness, cracks and corrosion pitting, and make sure no old gasket, carbon or hardened sealant is left in the corners or around the bolt holes
• Fit the gasket dry unless the workshop manual for your engine calls for a sealant, and then only the type it specifies — surplus sealant squeezes out into oil, coolant and fuel passages
• Draw the fasteners down progressively in the sequence and to the torque given in the manual for your engine, and recheck after the first heat cycle where the manual asks for it
