Genuine Volvo Penta hollow screw (banjo-type union bolt) used to secure a fluid line fitting while allowing fuel, oil or coolant to pass through its drilled centre. This item is specified for classified engines, so it should be selected where the engine is built to a classification society specification. It is a small, low-cost service item that is normally renewed whenever the connection it seals is disturbed.

🔌 Function

The hollow screw clamps a banjo or union fitting to its port while its drilled bore allows fluid to flow through the joint into the line. It therefore acts as both a fastener and part of the pressure-tight fluid passage.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Fuel, oil or coolant weeping or dripping from the union joint
  • Corrosion or debris blocking the internal drilling, restricting flow
  • Damaged or distorted sealing faces preventing a leak-free seal
  • Stripped, stretched or seized threads that will not torque correctly
  • Cracking or shearing of the screw body after repeated removal and refitting

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check the through-passage is clear and clean before fitting; a blocked hollow screw starves whatever it feeds
  • Always fit new sealing washers, one each side of the union where the original had them, and never reuse a crushed washer
  • Hold the fitting or pipe end against turning as you tighten, so the line is not twisted and the union is not pulled out of position
  • Tighten to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine — these seal by crushing the washer, not by force, and over-tightening splits the head or shears the shank
  • Bring the system up to working pressure and check for weeps before closing the space up
