🔧 Product Description

This genuine Volvo Penta shim is a calibrated valve-clearance shim used in the exhaust-valve clearance adjustment. It is manufactured to the original Volvo dimensional, material and interface requirements so the serviced assembly retains its designed alignment, sealing, load capacity and operating reliability. Calibrated shim thickness: 2.95 mm. In service, it sets exhaust-valve clearance by providing a calibrated 2.95 mm thickness at the designated valve-train position. Selection must be confirmed by OEM part number 1677348, the exact engine/product model, serial number and the installed assembly configuration.

🔌 Function

A shim is a precision-thickness spacer fitted between mating components to establish the correct clearance, preload or height during assembly. Selecting the right thickness ensures parts sit within specification so loads and running clearances remain correct.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Measured clearance or preload falls outside the specified tolerance during assembly
  • Visible wear, scoring or polishing on the shim faces
  • Deformation, dishing or cracking from over-torquing or hammering loads
  • Unusual noise, knocking or vibration traced to excessive component play
  • Shim displaced or missing after previous disassembly

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Shims are supplied in graded thicknesses and exist to bring a setting into specification, so measure with a micrometer and select the thickness the setting procedure for your engine calls for rather than matching one by eye
  • Note which shim came from which position on removal and keep them identified — once an assembly has bedded in, shims are not interchangeable between positions
  • Check both faces are clean, flat and free of burrs, corrosion and old sealant before fitting; dirt trapped under a shim shifts the setting as surely as the wrong thickness does
  • Discard any shim that is dished, cracked, pitted or fretted rather than reusing it, and make sure no old shim has been left behind in the recess
  • Recheck the clearance or setting after the assembly is tightened down, because clamping load can change the measurement you took loose
