The gasket compresses between two mating faces to form a sealed joint, filling minor surface irregularities so fluid or gas cannot pass. It maintains that seal through the joint's heat and pressure cycles.

🛠️ Service Notes

• Fit a new gasket every time the joint is disturbed — a gasket takes a permanent set once it has been torqued and will not seal reliably a second time
• Scrape both faces back to clean bare metal, keeping the blade at a shallow angle so it lifts the old material without gouging the surface, and use a plastic scraper on aluminium castings
• Check the faces for flatness, cracks and corrosion pitting, and make sure no old gasket, carbon or hardened sealant is left in the corners or around the bolt holes
• Fit the gasket dry unless the workshop manual for your engine calls for a sealant, and then only the type it specifies — surplus sealant squeezes out into oil, coolant and fuel passages
• Draw the fasteners down progressively in the sequence and to the torque given in the manual for your engine, and recheck after the first heat cycle where the manual asks for it
