🔌 Function

The spring ring seats in a machined groove and springs outward or inward to trap a component in position, stopping it moving along the shaft or out of its bore. It carries axial load without needing a threaded fastener.

  • Ring found displaced, distorted or missing on dismantling
  • Loss of spring tension so the ring no longer seats firmly
  • Wear or damage to the retaining groove

  • Use snap-ring pliers matched to the ring's ear holes rather than a screwdriver, to avoid distorting the ring on removal or installation
  • After fitting, check around the full circumference that the ring has sprung home into the groove, not just at the ears
  • Inspect the machined groove for wear or damage before fitting the new ring, since a worn groove will not hold even a new ring securely
