🔧 Product Description
Genuine MerCruiser 14-Inch Flywheel Engine Coupler - Part Number: 18643A5
A genuine used MerCruiser triangular engine coupler for selected GM four-cylinder, V6 and V8 petrol engines connected to Alpha and specified Bravo sterndrives.
The coupler bolts to a 14-inch flywheel and transfers engine torque through its internally splined hub to the sterndrive input shaft. The rubber-isolated hub also absorbs driveline shock and minor torsional vibration.
⚙️ Key Features
- Genuine MerCruiser engine coupler
- Correct Mercury reference 18643A5
- Triangular 14-inch flywheel-mount design
- Internally splined sterndrive-input hub
- Extensive Sierra, GLM, Mallory, EMP and Repower cross-reference coverage

- Alpha One and Alpha One Gen II installations
- Selected Bravo LX transom applications specifying 18643A5
- HP Range: Engine-output dependent
- Engine Type: GM inline four-cylinder, V6 and small-block V8 petrol marine engine
- Year Range: Approximately 1987 - 2009, with 3.0L fitment generally from 1999 onward
🔌 Function
The coupler transfers crankshaft and flywheel rotation to the sterndrive input shaft. Its rubber-bonded centre reduces shock loads and permits minor alignment movement between the engine and drive.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Engine runs but the sterndrive does not turn
- Burning-rubber smell from the flywheel housing
- Metallic or rubber debris near the coupler
- Splines stripped or heavily worn
- Coupler hub rotates inside the rubber section
- Repeated coupler failure caused by engine misalignment
- Vibration or knocking from the rear of the engine
- Drive shaft is difficult to insert during assembly
