• Check the pin and its bore for wear, ovality, scoring and corrosion; a worn pin in a worn bore shows up as lost motion in whatever it links
• Fit the pin the correct way round and to the correct depth, driving it with a punch that bears on the pin rather than on the surrounding casting
• Secure it with the same retaining device as originally used — a new split pin, clip or circlip; never reuse a split pin and never straighten and refit a bent pin
• A light smear of a suitable marine grease on assembly slows corrosion and keeps the pin free for next time
• Check that the linkage or component the pin carries moves through its full travel freely once everything is assembled
