• Offer the pipe up so the union faces meet squarely and fit it dry and without strain; never bend, straighten or re-form a delivery pipe to make it reach
• Renew rather than reuse a pipe where the procedure for your engine calls for it — the sealing cone work-hardens in service and often will not seal a second time
• Tighten the unions with the correct socket to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine; under-tightening leaks and over-tightening deforms and cracks the sealing cone
• Never slacken a union to bleed or check a system that is running or still pressurised, and look for leaks only with the engine stopped and the area wiped dry
