• Note the fitted length and the position of any adjuster, locknut or ball joint before removal, so the linkage can be set back to a known starting point
• Check the rod is straight and that its ends and joints are unworn — play at the rod ends shows up as slack and lost travel at the control
• Fit without preload or side strain, as a linkage forced into place will bind and wear its joints quickly, and secure every clip, pin and locknut
• Set the adjustment so the control reaches both of its stops with the correct free travel, following the adjustment procedure in the workshop manual for your engine, and check operation through the full range before running
• Lubricate the joints as specified and check the linkage for free, full movement at routine services
