🛠️ Service Notes

• Clean both mating faces back to clean metal and check them for flatness and for burrs or old gasket left in the sealing area; a face pulled up around a stud hole will not seal however hard it is tightened
• Always fit a new gasket, seal or O-ring where the joint uses one, and only use a jointing compound if the workshop manual for your engine calls for one at that joint
• Draw the fasteners up evenly in stages, working across the flange rather than round it, and finish to the tightening sequence and figures given for your engine
• Inspect studs, nuts and threads while the joint is apart and renew anything corroded, stretched or seized — exhaust-side fasteners rarely come out twice
• Re-check the joint for leaks once the engine has been up to working temperature and cooled again
