• Renew the O-rings, seals or gaskets whenever the elbow is disturbed, and clean both faces properly before offering the new part up
• Offer the elbow up dry first and check it lines up without being pulled or sprung into place; forcing an elbow into a misaligned run strains the joint and cracks flanges in service
• Check the bore as well as the outside — on the raw water side, scale, corrosion and debris build up inside the elbow and restrict flow long before it leaks
• Tighten the fasteners or unions evenly and diagonally to the figures in the workshop manual for your engine, and make sure every support clip and clamp goes back so the pipework is not carried on the joint
• Run up and check for leaks, and on a raw water or charge air joint confirm normal flow or pressure before leaving the boat
