• Check the drive — gear backlash, coupling condition, or belt condition and pulley alignment — as the workshop manual for your engine specifies; a misaligned drive will destroy a new unit
• Fit clean and check the delivery pipe and downstream lines for carbon build-up and restriction; a choked delivery line makes the compressor run hot and is often the real reason the old one failed
• Drain accumulated condensate and oil from the system and service the air filtration and drying arrangement before running the new unit
• Treat it as a unit rather than attempting internal repair or adjustment outside the procedures in the workshop manual for your engine, then run up afterwards and check for air and oil leaks at the joints and confirm the system builds and holds pressure as the manual describes
