🔌 Function

Carries oil from the sump to the pump inlet with as little restriction as possible.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Low or fluctuating oil pressure, worst at idle or when the boat is heeled
  • An oil pressure warning that clears as soon as the revs are raised
  • Foam or aerated oil on the dipstick where the pipe is drawing air
  • The strainer found blocked with sludge or debris on removal
  • A cracked pipe, a split weld or a perished seal at the pump joint

🛠️ Service Notes

  • An air leak at the suction joint gives exactly the same symptoms as a worn oil pump - check this pipe and its seal before condemning the pump, because the cheap part is the one that is usually at fault
  • Renew the seal or O-ring at the pump end whenever the pipe is disturbed, and clean the strainer thoroughly before refitting
