🔌 Function

• Isolate the batteries before removing or fitting a relay, and note the connections as they come off
• Fit like for like — coil voltage, contact rating, pin layout and any diode or resistor built across the coil must match the original, since a relay that plugs in is not necessarily the correct one
• Check the base, socket and terminals for corrosion, spread or burnt contacts and confirm the supply and earth paths before condemning a relay; damp connections and poor earths cause more of these faults than the contacts themselves
• Mount the relay in its original clip or holder so it stays secure and as dry as possible — vibration and moisture are the usual killers in a marine installation
• On petrol installations, only ignition-protected electrical devices should be fitted in the engine space or fuel tank compartment, so use parts approved for that use
