• Work clean: cap the fuel connections as they come off and clear the muck out of the injector recess before the injector is withdrawn, so nothing drops into the cylinder
• Clean the carbon off the seat in the head and out of the bore — a chip of carbon under an injector holds it off its seat and lets combustion gas past
• Renew the sealing washer, seal ring and O-rings supplied with the injector rather than reusing the old ones, and fit only the type of seal your engine's seat design uses
• Pull the clamp or holder down evenly to the torque given in the workshop manual for your engine; an over-tightened injector distorts and a slack one blows by
• Where the engine has electronically controlled injectors, the new injector's calibration code must be programmed into the control unit with Volvo Penta diagnostic equipment, then bleed the fuel system and leak-check before the boat goes back into service
