🛠️ Service Notes

• Identify the thread form and sealing arrangement before you start — a tapered thread seals on the thread itself, a parallel one seals on a washer, O-ring or cone face, and the two are made up in quite different ways
• Renew the sealing washer or O-ring, start the fitting by hand, and tighten to the figure in the workshop manual; a fitting drawn up hard to cure a leak usually splits the boss it is screwed into
• Use sealant or thread tape only where the manual specifies it, keep it off the leading threads and off any sealing face, and never allow any of it inside the passage
• Hold the fitting with a spanner on its hexagon while the pipe or hose union is tightened, so the torque is not passed into the casting behind it
• Check for weeping with the system at working pressure and temperature, not only cold
