🔌 Function

Drives the cooling fan and accessory belts, setting fan and accessory speed by its groove diameter.

  • Belt squeal or chirp following engine speed, and thrown or shredded belts
  • Running hotter than usual as fan speed is lost through belt slip
  • Black belt dust collecting around the drive
  • Grooves found polished or with the flanks worn away
  • Wobble or run-out as the drive is turned by hand, or bearing rumble behind it

  • Renew the belts when the pulley is changed and check the other pulleys in the run for matching groove wear
  • Check hub bearing play and run-out before condemning the pulley - a wobble that returns on a new pulley is coming from behind it
