- Check the groove or landing face for wear, burrs and scoring, and dress or renew the mating part if the retainer will no longer seat squarely
- Where the retainer holds a rotating or spring-loaded part, confirm by hand that the assembly is captive and has the free movement the manual specifies before closing up
