• Clean the thread and inspect it for damage, corrosion and stretch before reuse of the stud or bolt, and renew the nut if it is a prevailing-torque or all-metal locking type that has already been run down once
• Tighten to the figure and sequence given in the manual for your engine, in stages where several nuts share a joint, so the component is pulled down evenly
• Use the correct size ring spanner or socket rather than an open-ended spanner — the flange leaves little room and a slipping spanner rounds the hexagon
• Recheck the joint after the first period of running, especially on exhaust, manifold and mounting joints that heat cycle
