- Weeping or a damp film at the joint after reassembly
- Ring found flattened, hardened or cracked
- Nibbled or pinched edge from being trapped on assembly
- Ring swollen or softened from contact with the wrong fluid

- Single-use - fit a new ring whenever the joint is opened
- Check the gland and its lead-in chamfer for nicks; a scored gland will cut a new ring straight away
