• Clean or renew the strainer whenever the sump is off, washing it through with clean solvent rather than poking at it — a damaged mesh passes debris straight to the pump
• Look at what the old strainer has caught before you discard it; metal or bearing material means the real cause has not been found yet
• Fit new gaskets, seals or sealing washers on the suction pipe joints, as an air leak on the suction side loses oil pressure even with a sound pump
• Set the strainer at the position and orientation the manual specifies, clear of the sump floor and any baffle plate
• Prime the system and confirm oil pressure builds properly before putting any load on the engine
