🔌 Function

Draws oil from the bottom of the sump to the pump inlet, holding the pick-up at the right depth and keeping the inlet path sealed.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Low or slow-to-rise oil pressure, worst when hot or at idle
  • Rattle or whine from the pump as it pulls air
  • Pick-up gauze blocked with sludge or debris
  • Joint at the pump flange weeping, letting the pump draw air
  • Pipe cracked or fretted where it is clamped

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Renew the flange gasket or o-ring at the pump joint - a leak there makes the pump draw air and mimics a worn pump
  • Clean the sump and inspect the pick-up gauze before deciding the pipe is at fault
