• Check the hub bearing before you fit anything to it — turn it by hand feeling for roughness, drag or play, and look for grease or oil escaping past the seal
• Renew the hub as an assembly rather than nursing a rough bearing; a seizing fan hub will strip the belt and can throw the fan
• Inspect the fan, its fasteners and the belt drive whenever the hub is disturbed, and check the pulleys line up
• Tighten hub and fan fasteners to the figures in the workshop manual for your engine, and check the fan turns true and clears the shroud, hoses and wiring right round
• After the first running period, recheck the fasteners and belt tension and feel the hub for unusual heat or noise
