• A replacement control unit normally has to be loaded with the software and parameter set for your engine and installation before it will run — that is authorised-dealer work with Volvo Penta's own diagnostic tool, so plan the job around it rather than around the fitting time
• Isolate the batteries at the main switches and leave the system dead before disconnecting or connecting anything; back-feeding a live bus through a half-mated connector is a common way to destroy a new unit
• Treat the unit as static-sensitive and mechanically delicate: handle it by its housing, leave it in its packaging until it is going on, and never weld on the boat with control units connected
• Mate connectors clean and dry and push them fully home until the lock engages, then refit the harness clips and any shielding so the loom is not left hanging on the plugs
• Mount it in its own bracket and original orientation so the cable entries face as designed and water runs away from the connectors rather than into them
