• A spacer tube sets a dimension — it holds a bearing, bush or bracket at the correct distance, so its length is a functional measurement and nothing may be substituted for it
• Check both ends are square, clean and undamaged before fitting; a burred or bell-mouthed end effectively shortens the spacer and lets the joint relax in service
• Renew any spacer that is crushed, cracked, bowed or heavily scored — a collapsed spacer shows up as a fastener that keeps losing its tightness or a bearing that runs with play
• Fit it the right way round where the ends differ, and make sure it is actually in the joint before the fastener is tightened; nothing in the torque reading will tell you it has been left out
• Tighten the fastener that clamps through it to the figure and sequence given in the workshop manual for your engine
