• Find out why the old pump failed before fitting a new one — a pump that has worn internally sends metal through the system, and a new pump fitted into contaminated fuel and lines will fail again quickly
• Renew the fuel filters and check the low-pressure supply, tank and lines are clean and delivering properly; where contamination is found, the lines and soft hoses must be cleaned or replaced, not simply flushed through
• Fit the pump with new seals and the drive engaged, timed and tightened as the workshop manual for your engine specifies, and do not open or attempt to adjust the pump internally
• Prime and bleed the system by the manual procedure, then check for leaks — never slacken a fitting or search for a leak by hand on a running high-pressure system, as the fuel jet can penetrate skin
