🔌 Function

Clamps the aft propeller to its shaft so thrust and torque are transmitted without axial movement.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Abnormal vibration, noise or movement at the retained component
• Visible wear, fretting, corrosion or impact damage
• Loose hardware or loss of the specified locking function
• Misalignment or uneven loading of adjoining parts
• Damage found during scheduled drive or propeller service

🛠️ Service Notes

• Assemble the thrust washer, cone and any spacers in the order the manual gives onto a clean, undamaged thread — the propeller is clamped by the whole assembly, not held by the nut alone
• Tighten to the figure given in the workshop manual for your drive; a nut merely nipped up lets the propeller work on the shaft and ruins the hub and the taper
• Fit a new locking device where one is used — a lock or tab washer bent onto the flats, or a new split pin — and never reuse one that has already been bent
• Renew the nut if the thread is stretched, galled or corroded, or if the locking tabs or their seats are damaged; a corroded nut is also the reason a propeller will not come off next time
• Check the nut and its locking after the first run and at every haul-out — a slack propeller nut is a common cause of vibration and of lost propellers
