🛠️ Service Notes

• Always fit a new snap ring rather than reusing the one you removed — a ring that has been sprung open once has lost tension
• Use proper snap-ring pliers and open the ring no further than it needs to go; overstretching it, or levering it in with a screwdriver, leaves it slack in the groove
• Clean the groove and check it for wear, burrs or spread before fitting, and make sure the ring snaps fully home right the way round — check it by eye, turning the assembly, not just by feel
• Where the ring has a chamfered or dished face, fit it the right way up with the sharp edge against the load
• Account for the old ring and any fragments; a piece of broken circlip left inside a gearcase or housing will do serious damage
