🔌 Function

Converts mains electrical power into coolant heat so the engine block is warm before starting.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Heater remains cold when energised
• Earth-leakage protection trips
• Coolant leakage at heater or pipe seals
• Damaged cable or overheated connector
• Poor preheating caused by blocked coolant circulation

🛠️ Service Notes

• The cooling system must be filled and properly vented before the heater is switched on — energising the element in a dry or air-locked jacket will burn it out
• Isolate the shore supply and let the engine cool before removing or fitting a heater, and drain enough coolant to work below the heater opening
• Renew the sealing ring or gasket at the opening and tighten to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine
• Inspect the element for scale and the housing for corrosion; a heavily scaled element runs hot and will fail again
• Have the electrical connection made off correctly and protected, fed from a properly earthed and protected shore supply, and check the cable and connector for damage each season
