• Use the correct tool and open the ring only as far as it needs to go — a ring that has been over-spread or nipped in a vice will not hold
• Check that the groove is clean and undamaged and that the ring is seated fully round its whole circumference before the assembly is loaded
• Fit the ring the right way round where one face is chamfered or dished, with the square-cornered face against the load
• Reject any ring showing a twist, a bright rubbed patch or a nick, and never grind or file one to fit
