• Where the cap nut retains a pipe, cone or sealing washer, renew the sealing element and make sure the pipe enters square and unstressed before tightening
• Renew any cap nut that is corroded, has damaged threads or rounded flats, and refit whatever washer or locking arrangement belonged with it
• Marine-grade anti-seize on stainless threads reduces galling and makes later removal possible, but keep it off threads that must take a locking compound
