• Fit a new clip rather than reusing one that has been off — clips lose tension once sprung or spread, and one that no longer grips is worse than none
• Open a spring or retaining clip only as far as it has to go; over-spreading permanently weakens it
• Make sure the clip is seated fully in its groove or over its landing all the way round, and the right way about where one face is chamfered
• Check whatever the clip retains for wear and correct seating at the same time — a clip that has come adrift usually means something under it has been moving
