• Isolate the batteries before disconnecting it and note the connections so it goes back exactly as it came off
• Make the terminals off clean and tight with a good earth, and protect the connections against damp — a corroded terminal or poor earth gives false readings and false alarms
• Where the unit screws into a housing or waterway, use only the sealing washer or thread treatment the workshop manual for your engine specifies; extra sealant can upset both the seal and the earth path
• After fitting, run the engine up and satisfy yourself the reading or warning behaves sensibly against a known good reference before relying on it at sea
