• Clean both mating faces without scoring them — avoid steel scrapers and blades on alloy faces, and check the faces for flatness and for corrosion pitting around the ports before assembly
• Renew every gasket, O-ring and shaft seal that comes out with the housing, and fit dry unless the workshop manual for your engine specifies a sealant
• Inspect the housing bore, the seal seat and the drain or weep hole; old or wrongly mixed coolant erodes and pits these housings, and a blocked weep hole hides a failing seal until the bearing has gone
• Check that the impeller turns freely and that the running clearances are within the figures the manual for your engine gives before the housing goes back on
• Tighten the fasteners to the manual torque and in the specified sequence, since an alloy housing pulled down unevenly will distort and leak, then refill with the coolant specification for your engine, bleed the system and run up to temperature to check for leaks at the joint and at the weep hole
