• Check that the sealing face and the housing are clean and undamaged, and use any seal supplied with the filter rather than the old one
• Observe any flow-direction or orientation marking on the filter and make sure it seats fully home before closing the housing
• Keep dirt out while the housing is open, and clean away anything that has collected in it before the new filter goes in
• Run the engine afterwards, check for leaks and for correct operation, and change the filter again at the interval in your engine's maintenance schedule
