• Offer the support up and get both ends aligned with the fasteners finger-tight before tightening anything down — forcing a bracket into place leaves the component and the support permanently in strain
• Check the mating faces are clean and flat and that the support sits fully home without packing or shimming unless the workshop manual for your engine calls for it
• Inspect the old support, and the casting or panel it bolts to, for cracks around the bolt holes and elongated or worn holes; a support that has been working loose has usually damaged its seat as well
• Renew any locking fasteners and tighten to the figure given in the manual for your engine, then support the component so it is not left hanging on hoses, wiring or pipework
• Recheck the fasteners after the first period of running, and confirm the supported item still has clearance from moving parts and hot surfaces
