Sacrificial anode weighing 0.100 kg, listed in the maintenance parts schedule as the manifold anode for the Gen 5 petrol engines: the V6-200, V6-240 and V6-280, the V8-300 and V8-350, and the 6.2-litre V8-380 and V8-430. It sits in the water jacket of the exhaust manifold behind cover plate 21403627, with seal 21403629, and two are used in twin-manifold installations. The earlier Gen 1+ V6 and V8 engines and the 6.0-litre V8 take heat exchanger anode 3858995 instead.

🔌 Function

The anode sacrifices its own material to reduce galvanic corrosion of the exhaust manifold water jacket and the connected exhaust components.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Anode more than half consumed
• Heavy pitting or fragmentation
• Rapid manifold corrosion
• Anode remaining intact because of poor electrical contact
• Water leakage around the anode cover
• Damaged anode mounting surface

🛠️ Service Notes

• Volvo Penta now recommends aluminium anodes for salt and brackish water in place of zinc and is phasing most zinc anodes out, so check what is on the boat when you renew
• Clean the seat to bright metal so the anode makes proper electrical contact, and never paint or coat an anode
• Do not clean an anode with sandpaper, a wire brush or steel tools, as these damage the galvanic protection
• Always refer to the operator's manual for the recommended maintenance and service intervals for your engine and drive
